The Top Lacrosse Recruiting Camps for 2014

After hundreds of requests for a Girl’s Recruiting Camp Guide a few years ago, we worked with club directors, former players and college coaches to put together a list of the top options for recruiting camps or showcases for your daughter. This year is the third year of our girls’ recruiting camp guide, keeping pace with the accelerated recruiting timeline. As of this writing, players have already started receiving invitations to Elite 120 and are applying to Northstar or Nike Top of the Class.

Remember, you do not go to recruiting events to be discovered. You go to be seen by schools that already know about you, but want to see more.

Note

LacrosseRecruits.com has over 4,500 members. As part of select packages, we actually help you build a schedule of events based on the player's target list of schools. You can see a list of committed LacrosseRecruits.com members here, and you can see our packages here.

Our Lacrosse Camp Guide

This guide is a valuable resource for parents and players who are trying to decide which camps are worth attending. From all of the camps that we have attended as players, coaches and spectators, we put together a list of the top recruiting camps for 2014. Each lacrosse recruiting camp review has three sections. The first section, “Summary,” contains information taken from the event website. This provides a general overview of the camp. The second section, “Overheard,” features the perspective of players and coaches regarding the event. This section provides a first-hand view of the lacrosse recruiting camp. In the final section, “Our Take,” the LacrosseRecruits.com experts provide their perspective on which players can benefit most from that specific event.

Elite 180

Summary
The camp enrollment is limited in order to keep player to coach ratio at a level that allows the coaches to get multiple exposures to each of the players. What further separates the recruiting experience at Elite 180 from the many others out there is the attention paid to provide student athletes with the complete recruiting picture. On the final evening of the camp, an admissions person from a NESCAC school provides important nuts-and-bolts information about college applications, Early Decision vs. Regular Decision, and answers so many other common questions that future college applicants may have.

Overheard
“Elite 180 provides a wonderful perception of DIII lacrosse, as well as the ability to play competitively. This camp was beneficial for me during my recruiting process and I would definitely recommend it to other high school student athletes.”

Our Take
Elite 180 caters to players who are interested in playing DIII lacrosse at a most selective academic schools like those in the NESCAC. About 75% of the Top 20 DIII programs are on staff. It really gives coaches a feel for a player on and off of the field, and is a great choice for a player who is trying to get recruited by these programs. While mainly a DIII-centric event, the talent is very strong.

Futures Select Lacrosse

Summary Futures Select was designed to teach rising freshman and rising sophomores individual and team skills being used at the highest level in women’s lacrosse. Small group drills, half field situations, and full field games are used to teach “the how” and ”the why” elite players have the success on the field. With the use of video, Futures give players an in depth review of their play, instruction, and a unique tool to use in the recruiting process. As part of the registration fee, the Futures participants get the film of all of their play at the event to use towards the recruiting process.

Overheard
“The focus on individual and team skills was a very good way to learn from some great lacrosse minds.”

Our Take
Futures Select is run by an impressive group, led by Team USA member and 2010 Georgetown graduate Molly Ford and USA women’s assistant coach and world champion on the US men’s team, Mac Ford,. With the focus on individual skill development, having a director with as much clout and top-level experience as Ford should pay dividends, as players will be learning from the very top of the women’s lacrosse world. In addition to skill development, there is an emphasis placed on education about the recruiting process, which is an excellent component.

Maximum Exposure

Summary
Maximum Exposure Girl's Lacrosse Camp brings together the most talented rising juniors and seniors from across the country and provides an unrivaled competitive experience. This camp, sponsored by Under Armour, provides all you need to prepare you for the next stage in the recruiting process. Every current college coach is invited to attend Maximum Exposure, giving them the unique ability to concentrate all their recruiting efforts solely on you as a member of the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 classes.

Overheard
“Maximum Exposure has become a more important stop for Freshman and Sophomore players with DI aspirations. There are a few ‘diamond in the rough,’ players who will get noticed in the older age groups. But for the most part, the older players are either committed or going DIII.”

Our Take
If your daughter has DI aspirations and wants to play in the Mid-Atlantic region, this is a necessary camp to attend. It is a great opportunity to learn from two of the biggest names in DI coaching: in Cathy Reese (University of Maryland Head Coach) and Jen Adams (Loyola University Head Coach).

Maverik Showtime Girls National Recruiting Spotlight

Summary
After a strong debut in 2013, this event will enter its second Summer in 2014. The showcase follows the same format as the nationally recognized boys Showtime event. 160 of the top rising sophomores (Class of 2017) and 160 of the top rising juniors (Class of 2016) will have the opportunity to showcase their individual skills in front of some of the top coaches in the country. Over the last six years, the boys Maverik Showtime National Recruiting Spotlight event at Western Connecticut State University has quickly become one of the nation’s premier college recruiting showcase events – in 2013, every school in the top 50 was represented. Girls Showtime will provide players with a unique platform to showcase their skill alongside and in front of some of the top players and college coaches in the country.

Overheard
“Following in the footsteps of the successful boy’s events, this camp is becoming one of the top places to be seen by DI coaches.”

Our Take
Showtime has set itself apart from the crowd on the boy’s side very quickly. The format is showcase only and players/coaches thrive in it. In its first year this past Summer, the event went very well and was well attended by coaches. Once again in 2013, organizers are securing a top level representation of players from all over the country. Like last year, they will pull very strongly from the Tri-State area where the Showtime Founders reside. They will once again rely on Aly Josephs (Maverik Director & former Northwestern AA) on cultivating a strong group of players from emerging markets and her deep contacts in the coaching community. If you think your daughter has what it takes to be a DI prospect, Showtime is a place where you will want to be. Mid-Atlantic Elite Lacrosse Winter Showcase

Summary
The Mid-Atlantic Elite Lacrosse Winter Showcase is a one-day instructional recruiting showcase designed for elite level 2015 and 2016 student-athletes who are exploring DIII opportunities. The day will feature a unique blend of coaching, instruction and education aimed at increasing the awareness of attendees to opportunities at the DIII level.

Overheard
"We truly want to provide student-athletes with general information about the Division III experience. We think that this educational piece is what makes our program different from other general showcases."

Our Take
The Mid-Atlantic Elite Lacrosse Winter Showcase is an event that will debut in 2014. Tailored for athletes targeting the DIII experience, this event will blend educational components – such as presentations on recruiting, admissions and financial aid – with the playing aspects common to a showcase. This blend, coupled with very capable directors led by Co-Founder Brooke Diamond Burke (also the head coach at Washington and Lee) and the event’s timing free of competition – make it a great destination for Mid-Atlantic players targeting DIII schools.

Nike Top of the Class

Summary
Nike Top of the Class will enter its fifth Summer in 2014. The showcase differs from most in that each camper receives individual instruction from each college coach in small station groups during camp. The showcase program focuses on advanced skills, position play, team concepts and an overall intense level of competition. Night games will be coached by the college coaches, where players will get the opportunity to work with them in a competitive team atmosphere. The camp is open to any and all entrants.

Overheard
“This camp is really fun and challenging. You are provided many chances to learn skills as well as display your own. The coaches and counselors are helpful and very approachable for any questions you have. I would recommend this camp to anybody who is interested in competitive lacrosse.”

Our Take
Coaches from Harvard, Stanford and UNC have joined together for this showcase, which allows for rising seniors, juniors and sophomores to display their skills. The perk to this showcase is the focus on individual instruction from college coaches, which provides both a good learning tool in addition to exposure. If you are interested in a wider variety of schools, though, this event may not be the best fit.

Northeast 215

Summary
Northeast Top 215 puts you in direct contact with some of the best minds in women’s lacrosse while giving you the opportunity to separate yourself from the 2000+ players that make up the national 2016 and 2017 classes. Over three days, players eat, train and play as a collegiate athlete. Athletes will work directly with the staff and be instructed in high-level technical and tactical components of the game. During the afternoons and evenings, teams battle for the championship title, while late evening is comprised of breakout sessions, tactical sessions, and guest speakers.

Overheard
“I found this camp to be extremely beneficial during my recruiting process. NT215 pulled coaches from the Northeast and beyond. It gave me the exposure I needed with some top schools. I’d recommend it to any high school player looking to play competitively at the next level.”

Our Take
With a variety of DI and DIII in attendance each year, this camp is a strong fit for those players who are looking for a future with an academically and athletically competitive school – especially in the Northeast. The limitation of spots allows for players to receive a more personalized experience in terms of attention and direct coaching. This summer will be the fourth year of the camp and given the track record, exposure and personal attention, expect this event to sell out quickly.

Northstar Invitational

Summary
The Northstar Invitational was developed as an invite-only camp for the nation’s very best high school girls lacrosse players to compete within a format which best showcases their abilities to top college coaches. The top 150 players in graduation years 2016, 2017, and 2018 selected will represent their region over three days of skill, performance, and full-game sessions. Northstar Invitational has been shaped and is supported by many of the Nation’s top NCAA coaches, and the most prestigious high school and club programs across the United States and Canada. Lake Placid, the historic Olympic Village in the Adirondack Mountains, offers the perfect setting for a premier recruiting opportunity for high school athletes who have what it takes to compete at the very highest collegiate level.

Overheard
“Northstar allows coaches to evaluate the hand-selected talent from across the country, all in one prime location. The structure and format of Northstar allows coaches to watch and evaluate athletes across all different aspects of the game. I look forward to seeing the highest level of talent in what promises to be one of the most competitive environments within the women’s recruiting landscape. Northstar provides the perfect opportunity for young girls who are invited to showcase their abilities, and ultimately bring their game to the highest level.”

Our Take
The Northstar Invitational is the premier showcases in girl’s lacrosse. The draw for college coaches is a thorough referral and invite system that guarantees a high level of play. As the recruiting process shifts towards earlier commitments, this type of event finds a needed niche. Many of the top programs are present at the event. In 2013, coaches present represented impressive places from Northwestern to USC. Lake Placid is also one of the best locations for Summer lacrosse, with the cool mountain air of the Adirondacks a welcome change of pace. Make sure to check out Tail’o’the Pup for great BBQ while you are up there!

Super Sophs

Summary
A one day showcase allows the top players to compete at the end of the summer when Division I coaches are focused on Rising Juniors. The event is kept to 200 players so each player gets a chance to showcase their skills in front of college coaches. Players and their parents participate in a recruiting seminar, a SPARQ combine, and then play games. Each player has access to game film from each game throughout the day.

Overheard
“Super Sophs was a great one-day format that supplied us with both information and exposure we did not find at many other events.”

Our Take
A Disclaimer: LacrosseRecruits.com is involved with organizing this event. (We will leave biases aside). Super Sophs will return for its third year in 2014. Modeled after the successful boy’s event, the one-day showcase allows athletes to display their skills in an intimate setting. The number of participants is kept low to ensure players receive as much exposure as possible, and the event provides a great resource in the recruiting process, with an informative seminar and combine-like testing also part of the day.

Triple Threat

Summary
Triple threat was designed for the advanced and experienced player going into grades 10-12. Run by Kathy Jenkins, the head varsity coach at perennial power St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (VA), this is an intensive and demanding four day lacrosse camp which will focus on higher level skills, strategies and techniques used at the college level. Campers are divided by age and ability level. This is an ideal venue for the elite player preparing for the college game.

Overheard
“I have sent a number of my players to this camp. It is a high octane camp where girls get better over four days. It is also nice that the coaches on staff are so hands on.”

Our Take
A solid crop of DI coaches attend this camp, as well as a several DIII coaches. The staff is made up of some great, experienced coaches with bases in more southern regions. It is a good chance to put one’s playing abilities out there for various levels of collegiate coaches to see.
